Pakistani opposition demands Musharraf's resignation

Islamabad, May 1 (IANS) Holding that there was "no chance" of fair elections under President Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's opposition conglomerate Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) has demanded that he relinquish power to a caretaker government.

It said that setting up of an independent election commission was a prerequisite to credible general elections.

"General Musharraf must relinquish power so that fair elections can be held under the supervision of a caretaker government of national consensus and independent election commission," ARD Secretary General Zafar Iqbal Jhagra told the media after the conclusion of an ARD summit meeting in Lahore.
